Our guest for this episode is Nelson Gilliat, Sales Manager at UserGems.
“You always see sort of the tip of the iceberg, but never the bottom. That’s what I want to share to [encourage everyone to] risk greatly and dare greatly. And don't be afraid of getting knocked down or changing direction because eventually, as long as you are trying to learn from your mistakes, and just work hard, then you will get there in the end."
In our conversation, he shares his challenges while sharing his outlook on how to approach failure.
Nelson Gilliat disappointed his mom by not going to law school, instead choosing B2B Marketing and Sales. In his 5 years of experience, he switched industries, changed from marketing to sales, transitioned from large companies to a startup, and learned from multiple failures. He is an aspiring author, and is expected to release his first book on B2B Marketing and Sales in Q1 of 2021. He is a philosophy enthusiast, peanut butter connoisseur, Jiu-Jitsu noob, and happy transplant to San Diego, CA.
Trinity: Hi everyone. I'm Trinity with user gems. And today I'm keeping it 100 with Nelson as Sales Manager at UserGems. Here's his story and encouragement to other revenue partitioners.
Nelson: So I kind of wanted to pull back the kimono as it were, and, and share with you guys, you know, my own personal story of ups and downs.
To kind of put your mind at ease. And I think people have this expectation that they put on themselves that their career should be this rocket ship that's only ever going up and they're always making the right moves. And I don't think that's the case. And personally, for me, it wasn't the case. And I wouldn't want people to have that type of pressure on themselves.
And I've had a lot of ups and downs in my career. I'm 28 now. And I graduated college in 2014 thinking I'd go to law school and [00:01:00] I didn't have at the time the appetite or the financial wherewithal to go since that I. Went into business, having no idea what the heck I was going to do in business or what I was qualified for.
And, you know, I ended up changing industries, you know, from marketing to financial services to, you know, now, uh, tech software. And I went from big companies to small companies back to big companies. And now back to, you know, a small but growing company. And if I look back at my career and I look at these changes that I made voluntarily or involuntarily, you know, some of the, what I thought at the time might've been setbacks, but just put me on the better footpath.
I speak to sales and marketers all day. And. It was a bumpy journey, but I don't think you can get to the top without that. Right. You always see sort of the tip of the iceberg, but never the bottom. And so that's what I wanted to share it's to, [00:02:00] you know, risk greatly and dare, greatly. Don't be afraid of getting knocked down and changing direction.
And because as long as you are trying to learn from your mistakes and just work hard, then you will kind of get there in the end. If you look at my LinkedIn, you don't see my failures, right? Like I don't broadcast or advertise that. And not many people would know that, but I wanted to mention that.
Because I think you should be proud of your failures in a way as like your scars, you become right stronger through it. And certainly I think you're more apt to learn more or grow under duress or in uncomfortable situations and having to pivot. But I think people might shy away from risk and so they will choose certain safe careers that don't interest them.
Or aren't fun or aren't challenging for fear of failure, but I [00:03:00] think one needs to put other people's views. On themselves aside and focus about how you view yourself and that that's really what's most important. Right. And so, you know, don't worry about taking that risk and if you fail. So what I think it was Churchill, who said that success is moving from one failure to another, with no loss of enthusiasm.
So just dust yourself off and get back in the game. Is what I would say to everyone.
